About Swirlmeter

Swirlmeter was an innovative product in its time - a "vortex precession" flowmeter - and it was manufactured and sold off and on for many years by Fischer and Porter. The Swirlmeter did not require a straight run. It was highly accurate, and had very good repeatability and turndown. The vortex shedding flowmeters of today are based on its design.

Once ABB acquired the Fischer and Porter product line in 1999, it fully integrated the Swirlmeter with its vortex shedding flowmeter, and made the product even more stable, and more affordable to manufacture, than the Swirlmeter. By 2003, ABB's offering included the original design for its sensor and transmitter, with only slight modications to the flow element body. In some instances, a spoolpiece was provided, and, depending on customer needs, could be changed per application on an as-needed basis.

Now, ABB's vortex shedding flowmeters are equipped with digital signal processing (DSP) and advanced filtering techniques for improved flow signal detection. They are immune from the effects of hydraulic noise and pipeline vibration. The ABB Swirlmeter of today is marketed as the FS4000 (TRIO-WIRL S).
